Pollution by Seeduwa ‘Prima’ factory
Residents of Bandarawatta Rajapakse housing scheme in Seeduwa protested against the disposal of waste matter by the Agro (Prima) Institute Ltd recently.
Residents complain that factory disposals are polluting the canal that runs across their residences.
Further it is said that their life is threatened by unhygienic matter floating on the canal which is a breeding ground for worms. This they say is very hazardous to their health. Children have contacted infectious diseases.
This canal with the polluted water flows to the Negombo lagoon. The residents of the scheme say that their drains are clogged with solid matter and emanates a bad odour.
Shantha Kumar secretary of Rajapaksepura Ekamutu Development Society said politicians build housing complexes, canals and lakes for political gain and people from time to time have to face difficulties.
He said the canal running across the scheme was built during the UNP regime in 2002 to pacify the needs of the factory.
Chief priest of the Sri Rama Viharaya Dhamma Rakkitha Thero said that around 1000 families are affected and deprived of their rights.
Katunayake UC Mayor said that the ‘Prima’ is a BOI approved project. Its environment licence and evaluation report are being endorsed by the Central Environmental Authority (CEA).
The residents in Rajapaksepura had complained to Seeduwa Police.
