Protest over proposed coal power plant at Embilipitiya by Raja Waidyasekera

Residents of Kubugoda Ara at Embilipitiya protest against the setting up of a coal fired power plant at Embilipitiya.

Kubugoda Ara is a thickly populated area and as such, setting up of coal fired power plant would endanger the health of people, residents say.

"Investors, after failing in their attempts to set up the plant in several parts of the country, have now decided to set it up in Embilipitiya," they said.

The residents added that in the feasibility study report laid out false reasons to get the approval of the state and the relevant institutions.

High officials of the government are supporting the setting up of the coal fired power plant because certain people had been promised highly paid executive posts after setting up of the coal fired power plant, they said.

The medical officers in the area say this coal fired power plant would pose a short term and long term health and sanitary problems for the residents since it is not conducive to a thickly populated area.

"Plans are underway to obtain ground water for the project and that will cause a severe shortage of water in the area," residents said.
