Candle-lit nights may dawn due to shortsightedness of politicians By Haseena Razak

Power and Energy Minister, Susil Premajayantha, warned the public that there might be a power shortage in the future and they would have to live by candlelight because politicians had postponed projects like the Upper Kotmale hydro power plant. The Minister said this at an event held yesterday to award gold medals to employees who had served the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) for 25 years or more.

Speaking on the privatisation of part of the CPC, Mr. Premajayantha said that it had happened during the previous government and that it was not impossible to pay off the company's massive debt. The Minister stated that the challenge now was to provide people with energy at an affordable price while the world oil prices kept rising.

Chairman of the CPC, Jaliya Medagama, drew attention to the chaotic situation that the company was in, and told the employees present that they should remember privileges and bonuses provided to them and act in a responsible and exemplary manner. He commended the employees who received awards, as it was rare to find people who would remain with the same institution for that long.

CPC Director, Chethiya Ekanayake, said that the foundation of the economy, which is the CPC, had been weakened and described the present situation of the CPC as bleak. He asked the employees to work with dedication in order to restore the Corporation to the successful project it was.

One hundred and thirty five employees received gold medals along with a certificate of service at the event. 66 of them were from the CPC and 69 were from the Ceylon Petroleum Storage Terminal Limited.
