Kandy city waste water disposal project
I have been a resident of Kandy and a senior doctor attached to Kandy and Peradeniya Hospitals since 1985. I was appalled to read the article entitled "Water Board in two minds etc" in the front page of your newspaper, of 20th September.
A waste water disposal project is, in my opinion, a crying need for the city of Kandy.
The ‘Meda Ela’ which runs through the center of Kandy next to William Gopallawa Mawatha is polluted and emanates a foul stench at most times almost everyday.
I go frequently for walks past some of the leading tourist hotels of Kandy. Often the drains around the hotels give a foul smell. It is rumoured that the cesspits are overflowing.
Kandy, Sri Lanka’s second city does not have a waste water disposal scheme.
It is indeed a pity if the Kandy Waste Water Disposal Project is abandoned and Kandy has to forego the loan-grant of Rs. 4000 Million awarded by the Japanese government.
I hope sanity prevails a suitable site is selected and this project is carried out soon.
